Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bağlanmasıyla oluşan kısaltarak polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok skorda polipeptit madun birimi barındırır). Gerçek nüans peptitlerin kısaltarak, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, başka amino asite kesiksiz, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bağlanır. Polipeptid yapısına berklan amino asitlerin her biri yapıya peptid bağlarıyla bağlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine berklan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, boydak amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin başka ucundaki boydak α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
